GCMD and INTERCARGO partner on dry bulk decarbonisation

The Global Centre for Maritime Decarbonisation (GCMD) and the International Association of Dry Cargo Shipowners (INTERCARGO) have agreed a two-year partnership with the aim of accelerating emissions reduction efforts across the dry bulk sector.

The collaboration will aim to address specific decarbonisation challenges for bulk carriers, particularly those operating in tramp trades, where irregular routing and limited bunkering infrastructure create barriers to the adoption of alternative fuels.

GCMD and INTERCARGO will work together to support the uptake of energy efficiency technologies (EETs) and promote knowledge exchange on developments in low- and zero-carbon-fuelled dry bulk vessels.

The agreement will also explore ways to improve operational readiness for scalable decarbonisation technologies, including drop-in biofuels and onboard carbon capture systems.

“This partnership offers a valuable opportunity to deepen our understanding of the dry bulk segment’s operational realities and work collaboratively to address gaps in meeting the industry’s decarbonisation targets,” said Lynn Loo, CEO of GCMD.

“Through INTERCARGO’s consultative status at IMO, we hope to contribute to the development of global regulatory frameworks for maritime decarbonisation.”

The partnership aims to leverage GCMD’s experience in technical pilots and ongoing work on Pay-As-You-Save (PAYS) financing, a model designed to link repayments to verified fuel savings. This will involve sensors being installed on board participating vessels to provide operational data and validate emissions reductions.
