ICC launches playbook to accelerate paperless trade adoption

The International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) has launched a new guide to help governments and businesses accelerate the shift to paperless trade systems, including items such as electronic Bills of Lading (eBLs).

Developed by the ICC Digital Standards Initiative (DSI) with support from Singapore’s Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA) and the Mining and Metals Digitalization Forum (MMDF), the Paperless Trade Pilot Playbook provides guidance for the design and implementation of digital trade pilots.

Structured into six stages, the Playbook includes templates, checklists, and guiding questions to help organisations organise trade processes. The publication builds on ICC DSI’s Key Trade Documents and Data Elements Framework, released last year, which standardises critical trade documentation and data models to enable system interoperability across industries.

“In a time of geopolitical uncertainty and disrupted supply chains, one of the best ways to build trade resilience is through digitalisation,” said ICC Secretary General, John W.H. Denton.

“This Playbook provides the tools to move from aspiration to action, and to deliver the practical capability that makes trade more connected, inclusive and sustainable.”
