The Bahamas Maritime Authority (BMA) reports that it has agreed a deal with IDsure to introduce a fully digital Seafarer Record Book, described as a tamper-proof credential issued directly to seafarers following identity verification.
The new system replaces paper documentation and is intended to streamline certification processes for seafarers, shipowners and training centres.
BMA’s BORIS enterprise system will connect with the IDsure platform to enable digital issuance once a seafarer’s identity has been verified. The partners say this will remove manual submissions and reduce processing times, with records made available in a mobile-ready format.
Training centres approved by BMA will also be linked to the authority. Certificates issued via IDsure will be transferred automatically to BMA through BORIS to support oversight.
“The Bahamas Maritime Authority is committed to continuous improvement and the responsible use of technology to enhance the services we provide to our seafarers and industry partners,” said Capt Kapila Malawwethanthri, Deputy Director, Seafarers & Manning Department, BMA.
Development work is ongoing, and BMA has begun informing shipowners, managers and training providers of the forthcoming digital issuance process.
