India’s first port digital twin launched

V.O. Chidambaranar Port Authority (VOCPA) has launched a digital twin platform, becoming the first major port in India to implement the technology for maritime management. The initiative creates a real-time virtual replica of the port’s infrastructure, operational assets, and maritime ecosystem to enable enhanced visibility and data-driven decision-making.

The platform integrates technologies including Internet of Things (IOT) sensors, Global Positioning System (GPS) tracking, Light Detection and Ranging (LIDAR) mapping, and drone imaging. These tools will be used to continuously mirror real-time conditions and improve coordination across all operational departments.

“The implementation of the Digital Twin platform marks an important step in the Port’s modernisation journey,” said Shri Susanta Kumar Purohit, Chairperson of V.O. Chidambaranar Port Authority.

“By leveraging technologies such as Artificial Intelligence, IOT, and real-time data analytics, the initiative will enhance operational efficiency, improve vessel turnaround time, and strengthen safety and sustainability while aligning the Port with global smart port standards.”

The system provides live visualisation of berth occupancy, vessel movements, crane utilisation, and yard capacity. It also supports predictive maintenance of cargo handling equipment through Artificial Intelligence (AI) asset monitoring, to minimise downtime.

According to the port authority, the platform is designed to reduce vessel turnaround time by up to 25% and includes scenario simulation capabilities for ‘what-if’ modelling to prepare for operational disruptions. It will also track energy and emissions to support sustainability management across the facility.

The project is currently being implemented in a phased manner in accordance with international port standards.
