Shell Marine launches onboard oil monitoring service

Shell Marine has introduced a new onboard monitoring system, the Shell Marine Sensor Service (SMSS), designed to provide real-time insights into oil and equipment condition to help ship operators improve uptime and reduce maintenance costs.

The new service continuously monitors oil condition and alerts crews to early signs of issues such as water ingress or oil degradation, allowing maintenance to be carried out before failures occur.

Built specifically for marine environments, the system includes an inline sensor and a bridge display featuring a traffic-light interface, providing readings without requiring an internet connection.

Shell Marine says the system acts as a “digital deckhand,” giving crews immediate visibility over machinery health while allowing data to be shared with Shell’s shore-based technical experts for analysis and trend monitoring, so that recommendations can be offered to support condition-based maintenance.

“While the sensor may be a simple two-component device, the beauty of this solution lies in the advice that our Technical Experts provide,” said Marcus Schaerer, Shell Marine General Manager of Technical and Services.

“With over a century of maritime experience and our vast database of lubricant test results, we can provide customers with invaluable insights for safer and more efficient voyages.”
