ABS and Siemens Energy launch battery safety simulation project

ABS and Siemens Energy have agreed a joint development project aimed at deploying simulation technologies to improve safety assurance for lithium-ion battery systems used in marine and offshore applications.

The collaboration will focus on modelling and simulation of thermal runaway scenarios in battery systems, combining ABS’s experience in classification, standards and verification with Siemens Energy’s expertise in digital simulation technologies.

The partners said the work will support improved design verification, risk assessment and operational confidence for energy storage systems.

Simulation-based validation will be used to evaluate battery pack behaviour under extreme conditions and identify potential design improvements across the battery lifecycle.

“Safety and technical assurance are at the core of what we do,” said Michael Kei, ABS Vice President, Technology.

“By combining ABS’s experience in safety standards with Siemens Energy’s advanced modelling capabilities, we are helping the marine and offshore industries move forward with greater confidence in the design and operation of next-generation energy storage technologies.”
