StormGeo is expanding its Voyage Intelligence platform by integrating sensor data from shipboard energy consumers to deliver real-time insights for enhanced technical performance, starting with a joint project with parent company Alfa Laval to automate collection of engine and hull data.
By combining their resources, the two companies say that they can provide hardware installation, data collection, analysis, performance advice, and client support through a single entity, with StormGeo serving as the sole contracting party.
The integration combines equipment sensor data with datasets covering weather, route optimisation, voyage planning, navigation, emissions reporting, and bunker procurement to inform proactive efficiency measures such as hull cleaning or engine tuning, while also providing a basis for long-term fleet benchmarking.
“Ship operators need actionable insights, not just data. Continuous real-time monitoring helps transform sensor and performance data into smarter operational decisions,” said Petter Andersen, Vice President Shipping at StormGeo.
Additionally, the data can be utilised for condition-based monitoring of equipment to enable proactive maintenance, something that forms part of Alfa Laval’s broader strategy to expand sensor data collection across multiple ship systems through its cloud-based ALIoT platform.
“There’s a lot of potential to further digitalise, giving operators real-time insights that help them make better decisions, reduce risk, improve reliability, and avoid unnecessary costs. At the same time, implementing and using digital tools needs to be done with robust cybersecurity measures in place,” said Jesper Boman, Head of Vessel Operations at Alfa Laval.
