Hyundai and Siemens get approval for 3D model-based ship design process

Bureau Veritas Marine & Offshore (BV) has awarded an Approval in Principle (AIP) for a 3D model-based design approval process developed by HD Hyundai Samho and Siemens Digital Industries Software.

The process allows classification approval to be carried out directly on 3D models embedding technical drawing information, aiming to improve efficiency in ship design and approval. It has been piloted on part of a 174K LNG carrier under construction at HD Hyundai Samho and will be extended to other vessel types.

The project builds on a Joint Development Project signed in October 2024, which integrated Siemens’ NX and Teamcenter software with BV’s VeriSTAR Project Management system. The companies say the approach enhances interpretation, simulation, and collaboration, while accelerating approval cycles.

“Verification and approval based on 3D models will significantly enhance the accuracy and efficiency of ship design. We believe this approach will serve as a key enabler of digital transformation in the shipbuilding industry,” said Shim Hak Mu, Executive Vice President of the design division at HD Hyundai Samho.
