Researchers from the ShippingLab project SLGreen have conducted an experimental campaign in Copenhagen Harbour using the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) research vessel Dana IV.
During the test, the team collected live data from several sensor devices installed both on the vessel and on land. The project partners said that the set-up was designed to mimic the future operation of a highly automated commercial vessel leaving port under the monitoring of a pilot station.
The experiment also marked the first opportunity to collect data with the project’s newly integrated land-based sensor platform, which combines camera-based sensing and millimetre-wave (mm-wave) radar technology from Navtech Radar.
By combining and analysing data from both shipborne and shore-based sensors, the researchers are exploring opportunities in resilient pilot operations, monitoring the integrity of shipborne data transferred to the pilot station, and the multi-view visualisation of ship operations through the fusion of shipborne and land-based data.
When Dana IV returns to Copenhagen later this month, the experiment will be repeated to capture data from a vessel entering the port, thereby creating two complementary data sets for the research.
SLGreen is carried out under the ShippingLab platform and is supported by Innovationsfonden, Den Danske Maritime Fond, DS NORDEN, and Lauritzen Fonden.
